Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Kandy Regional office in collaboration with Human Development Organization organized a Human Rights Awareness Programme for Officials In charge of Police stations and Heads of the Government Departments in the Nuwara Eliya District. This programme was held on 29th of June 2012 at Police Auditorium, Nuwara Eliya under the patronage of Justice Priyantha R.P. Perera, Chairman Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
Mr. V.D. Sumanasekara, Regional Coordinator, Kandy in his welcome address pointed out the purpose of the programme, namely, to educate government officers why they had to face allegations relating to fundamental rights violations against them and how to avoid such violations.
Justice Priyantha R P Perera, Chairman, HRCSL explained the concept of Fundamental Rights and HRCSL activities which are being carried out at present. Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa, Commissioner, HRCSL delivered a lecture on International Human Rights Mechanism and LLRC report. Mr. Nimal G Punchihewa discussed in detail the Fundamental Rights and related judgments by the Supreme Court. He also emphasized the responsibility of the government to safeguard those rights. More than 60 participants participated at this programme.
