Human Rights Awareness Programmes and Work Shops for Sri Lanka Army

The Regional Office Vavuniya, Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka organized two awareness programmes and workshops on  18th and 19th June 2012 for the Commission officers and non Commission officers at 56 Division Vavuniya and 57 Division Kilinochchy respectively.

These programmes workshops were carried out under the patronage of Dr Prathiba Mahanamahewa, Commissioner, HRCSL. Mr. Nimal Punchihewa, Additional Secretary, HRCSL, and Mr. M.R. Priyadharsana, Regional Coordinator, Vavuniya also participated.  The Brigadier in charge of 56 Division and Brigadier in charge of 57 Division were presented at the workshops.

Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa discussed about International Human Rights Mechanisms, Case studies related to domestic frame work on Human rights and Legal provisions related to arrest and detention under the purview of Military duties. Mr. Nimal Punchihewa covered Introduction to human rights concepts and historical development of human rights and Women rights and child rights. Mr. M.R. Priyadharshana focused on HRCSL Act and Present Human Rights situation in the Northern Province.

 

More than 450 Commission and non Commission officers participated at these workshops. These human rights programmes and workshops were very useful to security forces in discharging their duties.
